USC Horizon 1 Lab Upfit

The final phase of Horizon I converted its remaining warm-shell floors into a series of highly specialized research environments, from wet labs and nuclear material containment to secure computational space.

This final interior upfit completed warm-shell space that had been constructed for future research use. The project introduced a range of specialized environments within the existing building, each shaped by the technical requirements of the work it supported.

Among the most unusual spaces was a lightning-strike testing facility enclosed within a Faraday cage. The upfit also included wet laboratories and dedicated nuclear material containment space, requiring the interior program to accommodate very different levels of control, separation, and technical infrastructure.

A large-scale server space provided secure, on-site-only computational capacity for research being conducted across several floors of Horizon I. Together, these spaces completed the final phase of the building’s research fit-out with a concentration of highly specific laboratory and computational uses.
